This course provides a theoretical introduction to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. It starts from a general classical description of the magnetic resonance phenomena with Bloch equations. It continues with the quantum description of the spin system, spin Hamiltonian, time-dependent Schroedinger equation, spin density operators, Liouville von Neumann equation, product operator formalism, calculation of the effects of different pulsed NMR and EPR sequences on the initial density operator. NMR and EPR experimental techniques to extract information about chemical exchange, g tensor of electron spins, hyperfine interactions and spin-spin interactions will be addressed. Exercises will cover the theoretical aspects presented in the course and a lab course may be offered (to be decided with the students) on continuous wave and pulsed EPR techniques.
